Vitamin B3 is the common name for nicotinic acid and its amide nicotinamide (niacinamide).

This vitamin is a precursor to the production in the body of a compound called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), which plays an important role in the process of respiration, the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol, as well as in the synthesis of steroid hormones.
