What is Vitamin B2?

Vitamin B2, or riboflavin, is an organic compound with a characteristic yellow-orange color and bitter taste. Like other B vitamins, riboflavin dissolves well in water and its excess in the body is easily excreted in the urine – so it is difficult to overdose it, even when taking high doses.

Vitamin B2 performs a number of important functions in the body – from participation in obtaining energy in metabolic processes, through ensuring the proper functioning of the nervous system and vision, to maintaining the proper condition of tissues such as the skin and mucous membranes.

What are the chemical forms of vitamin B2?

Riboflavin is an essential component of two important coenzymes – flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) – which are metabolically active, coenzymatic forms of vitamin B2. In fact, only such coenzymatic vitamin B2 has a biological activity.

In dietary supplements, Vitamin B2 can be found in two chemical forms – as an inactive form of free riboflavin and in the form of active 5’-phosphate riboflavin.

What is 5’ riboflavin phosphate (R-5’-P)?

Riboflavin 5’-phosphate (R-5’-P) is nothing more than the aforementioned flavin mononucleotide (FMN), which is one of the two metabolically active forms of vitamin B2. R-5’-P exhibits biological activity immediately after admission, without the need to convert it to other chemical forms, as is the case with conventional, inactive riboflavin. Vitamin B2 in this form is a ready-to-act coenzyme and can be immediately incorporated into metabolic pathways. For this reason, R-5’-P is also called a coenzymatic vitamin.

Maximum bioavailability and activity
