Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K2 (menaquinone) are the two most important forms of vitamin K discovered in food. Vitamin K1 can be found in green vegetables, leafy spinach, broccoli, etc. - it plays an important role in blood clotting. Vitamin K2 is found in high concentrations in natto - a traditional Japanese dish and is much better absorbed by the body than vitamin K1.
Vitamin K2 is initially transported to the liver and then to the bones and walls of arterial vessels, where it can accumulate due to its better bioavailability and longer half-life, thanks to which it plays an important role in building and maintaining strong bones, as well as inhibiting calcium deposits in the arteries.
Recent studies show that calcium (both from dietary supplements and food) without the presence of vitamin K2 is not transported to the bones. It should be remembered that excess calcium causes atherosclerosis in the body. This leads to hypertension.
