Unsaturated fatty acids n-3 and n-6 are essential components of dog food, because there is no possibility of their synthesis in the body. Polyunsaturated fatty acid with outstanding health-promoting properties, whose rich source is ruminant fat, is conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). CLA acid has a number of valuable dietary, preventive and medicinal properties. Studies on dogs have shown that it can prevent the formation, as well as inhibit the development of cancer (including prostate cancer) and stimulate the immune system. CLA is also effective in treating atopic dermatitis (AD) in dogs. Ruminant meat contains much more CLA than monogastric animal meat, which is due to the fact that CLA is formed mainly in the processes of bacterial biohydrogenation of linoleic acid in the rumen (the most important of the pregastrics in ruminants).

The most important group of health-promoting compounds contained in cranberry fruits are polyphenols. In 1914, benzoic acid was detected in cranberries, and hipuric acid was detected in the urine of people consuming its products. These studies contributed to the hypothesis that cranberries exhibit medicinal properties due to acidification of urine. This small and inconspicuous fruit may therefore be responsible for killing bacteria, and consequently – for preventing urinary tract diseases in dogs.
