How to choose a good inflatable boat (Warning – text protected by copyright)

1. Color of the pontoon

The color of the pontoon is very important for its durability, especially if our boat will be exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. Lifeboats for seagoing yachts are usually completely white or light grey. The white color reflects sunlight, which prevents the chambers from heating up and excessive pressure buildup. In our widths, virtually any color will meet your requirements except black. The black color absorbs the sun's rays, causing the buoys to become very hot, potentially causing burns or even damage. Sometimes, after several years, glued or welded areas that are completely black become seriously damaged. Therefore, you should avoid pontoons in which the air chamber elements in the surface part are black - in fact, probably no company produces pontoons in this color. Green, grey, dark grey and light pontoons, but not significantly black, work well for fishing in Poland waters. . Darker additions should not cover more than 10% of the surface area of ​​a single buoy.

1. Floor type

Slatted (slatted) - panel floor (HSS model). The floor made using this technology allows for very quick folding and unfolding of the pontoon, but it is not as light and stiff as the airmat. Pontoons with this floor work well with electric motors, acceptable with lower-power combustion engines, and brak of a keel limits their use in larger waters and seas - hence these models are eagerly chosen by amateur fishermen. Thanks to their shallow draft, these pontoons perform well on forest lakes, silted lakes and swamps.

Wooden with aluminum frames - proven construction, perfect for tourism and water sports, often chosen by anglers, easy to maintain and very strong. It should be made of waterproof birch plywood and additionally impregnated with varnish, as in the HSD and FWSD models. A steering console can easily be mounted on a pontoon with this floor.

VIB – a comfortable floor made with airmat technology that shapes a deep kill directly. Very light, durable floor made of polyester fibers; the boat with this floor fits in one bag. acc. In our experience, this floor is inferior to the Airmat in terms of durability - it is great for clean water, the internal shape is uncomfortable when we want to stand on it.

AirMat – a sensational floor made of polyester fibers, has the best features of a traditional floor, i.e. inflatable kill, the space between the bottom and the floor collecting water. Very light and durable, a pontoon with this floor fits in one bag and is 30% lighter than a traditional one, it can be set up and taken down in a flash. For active travelers, photographers, fishermen. With this pontoon, you will use it much more often than a traditional one due to its ease of adaptation. A steering console can be easily mounted on a pontoon with this floor. All my trips to Croatia and recorded videos are with inflatable boats with this type of floor.

Aluminum – the floor with the greatest weight, but also durability. It is worth buying a pontoon with an aluminum floor if you need to transport large, hard, heavy items. A steering console can easily be mounted on a pontoon with this floor.

RIB – pontoons with this floor are easy to launch and keep on plane with relatively low engine power. Best for people who want to have fun on the water and quickly cover long distances. Lightweight HSR RIB inflatable boats can be easily transported on a roof rack, and when folded, they are half the size of a regular boat, but relatively larger than standard inflatable boats. HSR pontoons are professional RIBs with a console – for those who already know what sports gliding is.

1. Material and its durability

The mechanical strength is determined by the middle layer, i.e. the mesh, the density of which is called grammage. The denser the mesh, the higher the density, e.g. 1100g/m2, the greater the working pressure of the pontoon and its durability. The quality of the polyester mesh has a direct impact on the working pressure of the pontoon. Nowadays, good pontoons have a working pressure of 0.25-0.3 Bar. Below 0.2 bar (atm) it is already oilcloth and not a proper pontoon (density 850-950g/m2). The outer layer must be UV resistant. This is a disadvantage of most of the pontoons sold on our market made of Chinese material. Info-Media inflatable boats are made of the highest quality materials manufactured in Korea. You should also avoid welded pontoons, they are a cheap solution for pool equipment.

1. Material quality

The mechanical strength is determined by the middle layer, so a good pontoon should have a dense internal polyester mesh and high resistance to oils, solvents and UV radiation. The first material verification is the working pressure confirmed in the CE Declaration. By default, it is 0.25 at for the sides; 0.8 at for the airmat. The material must withstand much higher pressure, so safety valves are set above this value.

1. Weight of the pontoon

Typically, the quality of a pontoon is directly proportional to its weight. The weight of the pontoon can be reduced by using an airmat, but using aluminum or spruce plywood benches instead of birch plywood is a poor solution. I do not recommend an aluminum seat, but lower quality plywood will crack when the boat jumps on a wave (personal experience from one of the trips). Some manufacturers reduce the diameter of the sides, e.g. for a 320cm long pontoon they use 36mm sides, then there is a visible reduction in displacement, load capacity and engine size. You can roughly judge the quality of a pontoon by its weight. A good pontoon with a full floor must weigh approx. 18 kilograms per meter of length, but this is a simplification. Example weight of individual components of a 380cm long pontoon: coating (rubber) - 43kg; aluminum floor - 23kg; floor connectors - 3kg; airmat floor - 8kg; oars - 2kg; benches - 5kg

1. Certificates and nameplate

Currently, in accordance with EU law, every inflatable boat must be accompanied by a CE declaration of conformity confirming the quality of its production. The nameplate is often verified by the maritime guard (often in Croatia). It is also important to have marine class C and a CE certificate, which is valid throughout the EU and in practice is a global standard for safe use. If you don't want your holiday spoiled by the maritime guard, make sure your equipment is legal. Our pontoons have all the required certificates, including marine class C, specified on the nameplate and the CE declaration of conformity included in the kit.

1. The payload puzzle

If a 3.2 m long pontoon has a capacity of 3.5 people, i.e. as much as a good 2.7 m pontoon, it indicates poor quality of materials or poor safety testing, e.g. small number of chambers, brak pressure equalizing diaphragms, reduced diameter of the sides. All good quality pontoons have similar load capacities, i.e. 2.7 - 3.5 persons people; 2.9 - 4 people 3.2 - 4.5 persons 3.6 - 5.5 persons This is primarily due to the quality of materials and certification conditions. If you also take into account that in order to get the pontoon on plane the power requirement increases logarithmically (approx. 6KM for 290cm) consider whether it is better to buy a "slip" or a decent equipment. The above does not apply to RIB sports inflatables, where the number of people is selected for stability in fast gliding.
