Shilajit (Latin Asphaltum punjabianum) is a health-promoting mineral-organic substance that creates raids on mountain rocks. Among local communities there are many terms for the described matter. It is called, among others, mumio, mumijo, giri, jatu, shilajatu or hajarul-musa.

Shilajit occurs in several mountain ranges of the world. The substance was discovered on the steep rock formations of the Himalayas of the Indian subcontinent (altitude between 1000 and 5000 meters above sea level). Mumio was also found in Russia (Altai Mountains), Norway, Chile (Andean mountain range) and in the mountainous areas of several other countries of the world.

The chemical composition of mumio obtained from individual mountain regions of the world shows differences. This is influenced by the type of plant matter that has decayed, the geological properties of the rocks on which the raw material is formed, the height of mumio over sea level, as well as the prevailing weather conditions – humidity and temperature.

Organic mass Asphaltum punjabianum is created mainly by humus (approx. 80-85%) and non-humic organic components. Among the humic material stands out fulvic acids, humic acids and humins. Nonhumic organic substances are m.in. mixtures of aromatic, aliphatic alicylic acids with low molecular weight and heterocyclic compounds containing nitrogen and sulphur. Biologists are mainly attracted by compounds such as oxidized dibenzo-alpha-pyrin (DBP) and hydroxyacetophenones (HAPS). The ingredients of shilajit are: benzoic acid and hipuric acid and their salts, fatty acids, ichthyol, ellagic acid, resin, triterpenes, sterols, aromatic carboxylic acids, 3,4-benzocoumarins, amino acids (both exogenous and endogenous), phospholipids, phenolic compounds, vitamins, essential oil, polyphenols.
