Glycine, or aminoacetic acid, is the simplest of all protein amino acids. It is the only one that occurs in only one spatial configuration and does not show optical activity. Therefore, in the name of glycine, the prefix L- is exceptionally absent, as in the case of other amino acids. It is also one of the most abundant amino acids in the human body, being an important structural element of proteins. It is estimated to be on average ok. 7% of amino acid residues in proteins. Glycine also accounts for more than 30% of the amino acids included in collagen and is one of the fundamental components involved in the synthesis of this important protein.
Glycine is an endogenous amino acid, which means that the body can synthesize it on its own. This is done mainly by synthesis from choline and also as a result of transformations of other amino acids, such as serine or alanine. As with other endogenous amino acids, however, glycine synthesis can be limited by various adverse factors, such as disease states disrupting its synthesis or an unbalanced, protein-poor diet.
