It is a parasitic fungus that grows on deciduous trees such as beeches, oaks or apple trees. Hericium varieties belong to the group of hydnoid fungi, whose characteristic feature are icicle-looking or lion's mane reproductive rods. All varieties of Hericium are excellent food, but one of them is a real star. This is Hericium erinaceus, or Hedgehog icicle.

Where do mushrooms come from?

Our mushrooms come from farms located in the mountainous regions of the Chinese province of Fujian, where they have been grown using traditional methods for hundreds of years. They are grown on natural wood, on which they occur wild in nature. We use only mushroom fruiting bodies, without any additives and unnecessary fillers. All fungi undergo studies on the presence of heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the most important microbiological parameters to ensure maximum food safety.

What does 10:1 extract mean?

10:1, or DER. Drug Extract Ratio) – this is an indicator of the amount of raw material to the amount of extract obtained. To obtain 1 kg of extract we use 10 kg of dried mushrooms. This is to concentrate the active substances in the product and facilitate the consumption of an effective daily portion. One scoop (500 mg) corresponds to 5 g of dried mushrooms.

How many polysaccharides does the extract contain?

Our mushroom extracts do not have standardization for a specific amount of polysaccharides, because it is not a determinant of the quality of the extract. Mushroom-based products include many types of polysaccharides (multi-sugars), such as chitin, alpha-glucans or beta-glucans. Alpha glucans are compounds that do not have properties attributed to fungi. Usually derived from starchy medium on which the fungus grows. We deal with them in the case of products based on mycelium or fungal biomass, which is a mixture of mycelium and fruiting bodies. Substances with active effect are also polysaccharides with a different configuration - these are Beta-D-glucans 1-3 and 1-6. They are found in the fruiting bodies of mushrooms.

What is the process of mushroom extraction?

Dry mushroom fruiting bodies are ground into fine dust, after which they are extracted with hot water and alcohol.

Water dissolves fungal cell walls made of chitin and extracts compounds such as beta-glucans (biologically active polysaccharides in fungi). Since we do not have an enzyme that would be able to digest chitin effectively - hot water extraction is the basis for the bioavailability of mushroom preparations. Alcohol, on the other hand, allows the extraction of compounds insoluble in water, such as triterpenes.

After the extract is concentrated, the spray drying process takes place, leaving the final dry extract. Spray drying is the optimal process for dewatering wet extracts - minimizing nutrient losses.

What distinguishes an extract from a ground mushroom?

Extraction is the optimal way to process fungi to extract active substances. They are enclosed in the cell walls of fungi made of chitin. We do not have an enzyme that would be able to digest chitin and for this reason mushrooms should be subjected to extraction processes. Extraction makes the raw material fully absorbed by our body.

What is the best time to take mushroom supplements?

Lion's mane and Cordyceps, as mushrooms supporting the state of alertness and increasing energy levels, are best taken in the first part of the day or before training. If you add mushrooms to coffee, it is worth limiting its consumption to 13:00-14:00. This will reduce the negative impact of caffeine on sleep quality. A good alternative to coffee is to drink mushrooms in tea.
