Description

Solgar Vitamin K2 MK-7 100 mcg helps maintain the balance of calcium in the body, is responsible for arterial health and proper bone density. Vitamin K2 plays a key role in the process of blood clotting, keeping bones in proper condition. It is also used in the prevention of osteoporosis. Supports the proper functioning of the skeletal and circulatory systems.

✔ Vitamin K is fat-soluble and occurs primarily in two forms: vitamin K1 (phylloquinone, found mainly in green leafy vegetables) and vitamin K2 (menaquinone, found in m.in. in fermented dairy and produced in the intestine by lactic acid bacteria). Vitamin K2 is transported to extrahepatic tissues such as bones and vascular walls, participating in the activity of the protein matrix Gla (MGP) and osteocalcin (bone Gla protein, produced by osteoblasts)1 – a vitamin K1-dependent protein.

✔ Vitamin K is a cofactor (i.e. a chemical compound needed by enzymes to catalyze specific chemical reactions) of carboxylation of glutamine residues in the gamma position (γ-carboxylation)2. In order to obtain the full activity of osteocalcin and thus its biological properties, carboxylation of its molecule by vitamin K-dependent gamma-glutamyl-carboxytransferase is required. The roles that osteocalcin plays in the human body are m.in. ability to regulate bone modeling by affecting osteoblast function and their differentiation into osteocytes (mature bone cells) and direct participation in bone tissue mineralization processes while stopping calcification in extrabone tissues2.

✔ Vitamin K2 is also used for naming MK-n, where “n” means the number (from 1 to 13) of isoprenoid units connected by a side chain to the naphthoquine ring3.

✔ Natto is a traditional Japanese dish made from soy fermented by the Bacillus subtilis var. natto strain. It has a distinctive taste and smell, and the grains are covered with sticky mucus4. Natto is one of the richest sources of vitamin K2 MK-75.

✔ Of all menaquinones, MK-7 exhibits the highest absorption and excellent bioavailability. This may be influenced by the very long half-life of K2 MK-7 (i.e. the time when its amount will decrease in serum by half), which results in much more stable levels of this vitamin in serum and thus its greater accumulation5,6. A comparative study found that postprandial serum concentrations of K2 MK-7 (after natto ingestion) were 10 times higher than those of vitamin K1 (after spinach ingestion)5.

✔ The degree of carboxylation of osteocalcin is considered the most sensitive marker of vitamin K in humans. It was shown that at the end of a 6-week study in which equimolar amounts of K1 and K2 MK-7 were taken, the change in the ratio of carboxylated to under-carboxylated osteocalcin was three times greater for K2 MK-7 than for K1, suggesting that higher serum K2 MK-7 levels reflect higher tissue levels and thus better utilization of K2 MK-76.

✔ Vitamin K, like vitamin D, is involved in calcium metabolism. A study in an animal laboratory model showed that vitamin K supplementation promoted reduced urinary calcium excretion and stimulated intestinal calcium absorption in animals on a diet with normal calcium content1.

✔ Vitamin K is also a cofactor in the production of blood coagulation factors (in the liver).
