Taurine – what is it?

Taurine is a non-protein amino acid, i.e. one that is not used to build body proteins. However, it performs a number of other important functions, thanks to which it is necessary for the proper functioning of our body. It is found in the brain, retina of the eye, heart and platelets. We produce it ourselves, and we also deliver it with food, eating meat and fish. Slightly lower levels of taurine are therefore observed in vegans and vegetarians, but deficiencies are rare. An additional supply of taurine is needed for artificially fed infants, because their body is not yet able to produce it, which is why taurine is added to infant replacement mixtures. Interestingly, taurine should be given to cats, because it acts as a protein and essential amino acid in them.

Taurine has a sour taste.
