Turmeric BIO 90% is a dietary supplement based on ecological extract from turmeric root (Curcuma longa), standardized for high content of curcuminoids (90%). The product was obtained in the extraction process, which makes it unique on the market of ecologically certified dietary supplements in Poland.

Turmeric is one of the most valued plants in the world. It comes from the Indian subcontinent, where it has been used for thousands of years as a spice and herb in traditional knowledge systems, m.in. in Ayurveda. Its popularity dates back to antiquity – the first written mention of its use dates back almost 2500 years.

Modern advanced scientific methods have confirmed that turmeric contains compounds with strong biological properties, referred to as curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric and a powerful antioxidant.

The product has been additionally enriched with ecological black pepper extract, standardized for the content of piperine, which is an important element of the composition.

The study selected Wistar albino rats (n = 96) of both sexes. The animals were divided into two groups: one group received curcumin (2 g/kg), while the other group received curcumin (2 g/kg), followed by piperine (20 mg/kg).

The kinetic profile was established for both groups at different intervals: 0; 0,25; 0,50; 0,75; 1; 2; 3; 4; 5 and 6 hours. The results clearly showed the presence of curcuminoids at higher serum concentrations 1 and 2 hours after the combination of curcumin and piperine. The obtained results became the basis for conducting a clinical trial.

Dr. Shoba conducted a randomized, cross-sectional clinical trial at St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India, to assess the potential of piperine to increase curcuminoid bioavailability. The study included 10 healthy volunteers aged 20 to 26 years.

Participants were given 2 g of curcumin followed by 2 g combination of curcumin and piperine (20 mg) after a two-week washout period. Blood samples were collected 0,25; 0,5; 0,75; 1; 2; 3; 4; 5 and 6 hours after administration.

The results were consistent with previous preclinical studies and showed that piperine improved curcumin bioavailability – plasma curcuminoid concentrations increased after 1 hour and relative bioavailability increased by 2000% (20-fold).

Both curcumin and the combination of curcumin and piperine were well tolerated by the study participants, without the occurrence of negative symptoms. This study was groundbreaking and was the first to demonstrate the biological potential of combining curcumin with piperine.
