What is Shiitake?

Shiitake, or Japanese Sclerosis (Lentinula edodes) is a species of mushroom related to our native mushroom. According to its botanical name, it comes from Southeast Asia and occurs naturally in countries such as Japan, China, Vietnam or Korea. The colloquial name Shiitake is a combination of two Japanese words (Shii – meaning “beech” (tree) and Take – meaning “mushroom”) and refers to the conditions in which the fungus grows. Shiitake grows most often on decaying, beech trunks.

Although the name Shiitake functioning in the colloquial circulation comes from Japan, with which it is currently associated, the tradition of cultivation and use of this mushroom is actually associated with China, where it was used for utility in ancient times, m.in. in traditional folk medicine.

Shiitake mushrooms associated by many people mainly as an addition to Asian dishes, also currently have a much wider application. Like other vital mushrooms, they abound in polysaccharides – among them beta-glucans.

Beta-glucans and polysaccharides

Polysaccharides are a vast group of chemical compounds with long chain molecules, made up of repeating sugar units. Due to their structure, polysaccharides can therefore be seen as biopolymers, occurring naturally in plant and animal organisms. Polysaccharides include starch, cellulose, glycogen or chitin. Individual polysaccharides have different properties and thus also play different functions, depending on the way in which monomeric sugar units are bound together, as well as depending on their type.

Another subgroup of polysaccharides, characteristic of fungi, are beta-glucans, which, like cellulose, are a component of dietary fiber, but unlike cellulose, are its soluble fraction. Beta-glucans are part of the cell walls of fungi, being one of the main structural elements of their fruiting bodies.

From a chemical point of view, these are compounds made up of D-glucose molecules connected by beta-glycoside bonds. Beta-glucans differ in chemical structure depending on their origin, virtually every species of fungi has its own unique variety of beta-glucans.

What sets our extract apart? / Double standardization

When choosing dietary supplements based on extracts, it is worth checking what the extract is standardized for. Despite the fact that many products are based on extracts with high standardizations, they usually refer only to the general content of polysaccharides. However, there is a lack of information about the content of beta-glucans, while they are the most important fraction of polysaccharides.

The information about the total content of polysaccharides alone does not determine the high quality of the extract, even when it is 40%, 50% and more percent. These can be alpha-glucans (to which it belongs, for example. starch), or, in addition, the content of polysaccharides may be artificially inflated

due to the presence of maltodextrin, which is sometimes added as a carrier stabilizing the extract.

Aliness Shiitake 400 mg is based on high-quality, double-standardized extract from the fruiting bodies of Lentinula edodes mushrooms, which guarantees the content of active ingredients at least 40% of all naturally occurring polysaccharides and 20% of beta-glucans.
