As early as the first half of the 19th century, the discoverer of creatine, Justus von Liebieg, observed that it always occurs in solutions along with creatinine. Scientists partially explained these issues in the next century, and finally, at the beginning of the 21st century. Creatine is the biologically active substance, while creatinine is merely its inactive waste metabolite. After the detachment of these two molecules, the ends of the creatine become highly chemically reactive, so they react with each other and close the molecule, transforming it into inactive creatinine. This reaction, leading to drastic creatine loss, is particularly intense in the stomach because stomach acid is highly acidic. It is not significantly inhibited even after dissolving creatine in pure water, as H2O molecules themselves also break down to form H+ ions. Methods for protecting creatine from conversion to creatinine involve either protecting its ends with bonds to other substances (e.g., malic acid) or mixing it with alkalis – compounds that remove hydrogen ions from the environment. The main drawback of such solutions is that, inevitably, the creatine content in the final market product is reduced.
