As early as the first half of the 19th century, the discoverer of creatine, Justus von Liebieg, observed that it always occurs in solutions along with creatinine. Scientists partially explained these issues in the next century, and finally, at the beginning of the 21st century. It is not significantly inhibited even after dissolving creatine in pure water, as H2O molecules themselves also break down to form H+ ions. Methods for protecting creatine from conversion to creatinine involve either protecting its ends with bonds to other substances (e.g., malic acid) or mixing it with alkalis – compounds that remove hydrogen ions from the environment. The main drawback of such solutions is that, inevitably, the creatine content in the final market product is reduced.
