The role of carbohydrates in physical activity

Studies also show an increase in glycogen resynthesis when proteins and carbohydrates are combined and consumed immediately after training. It was found that an advantage in muscle glycogen storage can be achieved after exercise by adding protein to a carbohydrate supplement (3). What exactly is muscle glycogen?

Simply put, muscle glycogen is an essential fuel for long-term, intense exercise, which is why its stores are so important during intense workouts. It is observed that muscle glycogen synthesis is twice as fast if carbohydrates are consumed immediately after exercise. However, if lighter carbohydrate supplementation is desired, glycogen synthesis can be enhanced by the addition of protein and some amino acids. In addition, the combination of carbohydrates and proteins has the added benefit of stimulating amino acid transport, protein synthesis and muscle tissue repair. Studies also suggest that aerobic capacity after regeneration is associated with the degree of muscle glycogen replenishment mentioned earlier (5).
