Ricoh GR IV Monochrome is a high-end compact camera created only for black and white photography. It has an advanced monochrome APS-C sensor that captures light without a color filter, which translates into exceptional sharpness, tonality and micro-contrast of the image.

RICOH GR IV Monochrome is based on the RICOH GR IV model and fully and consistently develops the fundamental concept of the GR series - the basic values of the camera, such as high image quality, fast response and mobility, while introducing a monochrome image sensor dedicated to photography, without a color filter. The elimination of the color filter and the interpolation process necessary to generate color images allows the camera to fully exploit the potential of the GR lens and high optical quality, providing sophisticated image rendering and rich tonal gradation. The built-in red filter allows for more expressive monochrome images, while the newly developed image control options, dedicated to monochrome imaging, allow for deep and varied monochrome image expression.

Construction for monochrome photography

In order to achieve the best monochrome image quality, the camera is equipped with a new CMOS image sensor without an anti-aliasing filter (AA), corresponding to the APS-C sensor, designed for monochrome photography, which allows you to obtain high-resolution images from about 25,74 million effective pixels. Unlike monochrome images created using a general color image sensor — where each pixel receives light through one of the red (R) filters, green (G) or blue (B), the information is interpolated to generate a color image, and the result is then converted to monochrome — each pixel of the transducer intended for monochrome images records information about the brightness of the object. Because it directly retrieves information about the light entering through the lens without interpolation processing, it enables a sharp monochrome render with rich tone gradation, and also allows you to create works that emphasize the granularity effect thanks to high sensitivity.

High speed and precision focusing

Phase detection in the image plane

Despite the fact that it is a camera designed for monochrome photography, it also supports phase detection in the image plane. This enables fast and precise focusing on the subject and responsive and agile shooting. Additionally, the sensor is designed for monochrome photography and provides excellent performance in low light conditions, making it easy to focus even in dark scenes. Autofocus shooting is possible even with the red filter on, so you can fully enjoy fast and responsive photography.

Support for various forms of monochromatic expression.

The camera has image control options dedicated to monochrome photography, which allow a wide range of monochrome expression. The “Solid” option uses a hard tonal curve for a crisp, clean look and render edges with refined clarity. The “Grains” option, characterized by a strong granularity effect, provides a finish resembling halogen-silver prints and printed materials, avoiding complete overexposure of the lights and preventing the shadows from crushing to uniform black, while creating a granularity that is clearly visible even on smart devices.

Carefully made outer casing

To evoke the primitive, essential world of black and white photography by unifying the overall color and texture, the magnesium alloy body, as well as the shutter release and cover ring are finished in matte black. The subdued gloss, deep texture and soft-touch surface make the unique character of the GR camera immediately visible. In addition, the front GR logo has a semi-matte black finish, which differs in gloss from the body finish. Moreover, the backlight of the power button has also been changed to white. Monochrome aesthetics are visible throughout the project.

Electronic shutter for fast shooting at speeds up to 1/16000 s

In addition to the traditional mechanical shutter, the camera is equipped with an electronic shutter that allows you to shoot with a shorter exposure time. The exposure time can be increased to 1/16000 s, which is effective for creative work using the high sensitivity of the monochrome matrix in bright conditions and in situations where it is desirable to shoot with an open aperture even in very bright environments.

Optics that really shine in a monochrome edition

Lens F2.8 GR

The camera is equipped with a GR 18,3 mm lens (equivalent to a 28 mm focal length in 35 mm format) F2,8. This lens, while maintaining a proven design philosophy and using successive achievements in the field of optical technology, has a 5-group and 7-element design, with large, aspherical, precisely formed glass as the last element. To take full advantage of the capabilities of this lens, the imaging system has been optimized specifically for the GR monochrome camera.

The monochrome image sensor is not equipped with a color filter and does not perform interpolation processing, allowing you to take full advantage of the outstanding optical performance of the GR lens. The result is exceptional resolution extending to the edge of the frame, rich gradation and low distortion. The true potential of the GR lens is fully revealed in monochrome mode.

Faithful Capture of Light

Monochrome CMOS image sensor

To achieve the highest level of monochromatic expression, a special image sensor was developed. It does not use a color filter to obtain color information; instead, each pixel captures information about the brightness of an object and directly converts it into a monochrome image. This allows the sensor to receive more light information than a conventional color image sensor, allowing for sharper images with greater detail and better sensitivity.

Contrast control

Built-in red filter

In monochromatic photography, the use of color filters is a commonly used technique to change the impression of an image. Among them, red filters can create images with strong visual impact — for example, by darkening shades of blue sky to increase contrast with clouds or by brightening red objects to make them more visible. Instead of an ND filter, the GR IV Monochrome has a red filter built into the lens, which allows you to expand the expression of the image by using color even in monochrome photography. The filter's on/off function is assigned to the Fn button, allowing for intuitive switching without interfering with the shooting rhythm. In addition, when the red filter is turned on, a warm color is used for AF backlighting.

Expand your possibilities of expression

Wide Angle Conversion Lens / Dedicated Flash

The camera supports GW-4 wide-angle lens. When connected, it allows shooting in ultra-wide-angle mode corresponding to 21 mm (in 35 mm format). The camera also supports the external GF-2 flash, which when connected allows not only low-light shooting, but also various flash applications, such as synchronization with daylight with automatic brightness adjustment. Its ultra-compact design allows you to keep your camera mobile even when plugged in.

To use the GW-4 wide-angle lens, you need a GA-3 lens adapter.

Monochrome image sensor GR IV

With a new sensor designed for monochrome photography, the brightness information obtained by each pixel is applied directly to images without interpolation processing. This allows for nuance-rich details, high resolution, and exceptional tone reproduction, ensuring superior monochrome image quality.

Dedicated processing of monochrome images

GR ENGINE 7

To maximize the performance of the matrix designed for monochrome photography, a new image processor was developed. It does not perform any interpolation processing that is necessary for colored matrices, allowing you to take full advantage of the brightness information captured by each pixel. This provides high resolution and rich detail, as well as depth of tone, achieving the imaging power required of a GR camera designed exclusively for monochrome photography.

5-axis, 6-stage image stabilization

The camera is equipped with a 5-axis image stabilization mechanism that corrects angular, rotational, and even offset vibrations by controlling the image sensor. Thanks to its high correction efficiency, corresponding to 6,0* degrees of shutter speed, it extends the limits of hand-held shooting. In an imaging system designed for monochrome photography that uses the brightness information captured by all pixels, image stabilization is also very effective. By compensating for the impact of camera vibrations, it ensures high resolution and high quality monochrome images.
