The OBDII system is mandatory for cars:
- sold after 1 January 1996 in the USA
- sold after 1 January 2001 in the European Union
- sold after 1 January 2002 in Poland
- Diesel cars sold after 1 January 2004
There is also the possibility that cars sold earlier could also have an OBDII system, but at that time it was not mandatory for manufacturers.
Cars equipped with OBDII system have:
- characteristic 16-pin connector,
- two or more oxygen sensors (probe λ),
- should have a sticker informing about exhaust emissions, which is most often placed in most vehicles under the hood or at the radiator. This sticker has information whether the vehicle is OBDII certified.
The mere possession of a characteristic connector by the vehicle is not an indicator of OBDII system operation - all 3 of the above conditions must be met.
