Beta-carotene is a provitamin of vitamin A. Provitamin is a substance that is converted into a vitamin as a result of chemical reactions in the body. Vitamin A contributes to normal vision. It helps in the proper functioning of the immune system. It affects the maintenance of the skin in good condition. Vitamin A contributes to normal iron metabolism.

Beta-carotene (β-carotene) is an organic compound belonging to the group of carotenoids. It is characterized by yellow, orange or red color, is fat-soluble and has the ability to absorb sunlight. Beta-carotene is also called provitamin A, because with the participation of unsaturated fatty acids (EFAs) and liver enzymes, the human body produces vitamin A from it.

Vitamin A is one of the most important ingredients necessary to maintain health and proper functioning of the body.

The human body cannot synthesize beta-carotene on its own, so care should be taken to ensure that the daily diet provides the right amount of it.

Most beta-carotene can be found in yellow-orange fruits (i.a. apricots, peaches, oranges, cherries, melon, watermelon, papaya) and vegetables (i.a. carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, red peppers, tomatoes) and dark green leafy vegetables (i.a. yarm, parsley, sorrel, chives, lettuce and dill).

The most common symptoms of provitamin A deficiency are:

• dry skin and abnormal keratosis of the epidermis
• inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eyes
• drying of mucous membranes in the respiratory, digestive and genitourinary systems
• increased risk of infection
• overall decrease in immunity

Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant, which is why it has the ability to capture oxygen and ions involved in the formation of free radicals. Thanks to this, reduces the risk of developing dangerous inflammation.
