L-taurine, or 2-aminoethylsulfonic acid, is a compound classified as non-protein amino acids. This means that unlike most of the most well-known amino acids, it does not have the ability to form peptide bonds and does not build proteins. Nevertheless, it is a very important compound for the body – biogenic amino acid, which is essential for life. Hence its very abundant occurrence in tissues (mainly skeletal muscles) and bloodstream. The important role that taurine must play in the body can be evidenced by the fact that it constitutes about 1/1000 of the human body weight and is thus the most abundant non-protein amino acid in the body.

L-taurine is formed in the body as a result of metabolic changes of cysteine and methionine (endogenous amino acid) or can be supplied with food. Since the endogenous synthesis of taurine is limited and decreases with age, and this amino acid occurs only in products of animal origin in food, deficiencies of this ingredient may occur – especially in physically and mentally active people, athletes, people on a vegetarian or vegan diet and the elderly.
