Lacoste is a brand founded in 1933 by the famous tennis player René Lacoste. Playing in the 1926 US Open tournament, he wore a white short-sleeved shirt made of French cotton for the first time. It was a complete change from the prevailing tennis fashion at the time. A year later, the American press called Rene “the Alligator” because of the alligator leather briefcase he was carrying. This nickname appealed to the audience, because it well described the fierceness of Lacoste on the tennis court. In 1929, a French tennis player invented his own shirt. In 1933, together with André Gillier, he founded a business. When mass production of T-shirts began, Rene Lacoste decided to use the image of a crocodile as the official logo of the company.
