About waterproof watches
Waterproof watches are sealed to withstand pressure.
Water resistance is tested in atmospheric pressure units (ATM). Each ATM represents 10 meters of static water pressure. This is not the depth to which you can wear the watch. Many watch cases have a base value of 1 ATM as “waterproof”. These watches are resistant to minor splashes, but should not be worn when washing hands or immersing them in water.
Remember that water resistance is tested under static conditions. Wearing a waterproof watch up to 50 meters in water exposes it to much higher pressure than during a static test at 50 meters. Therefore, the number of meters displayed on the watch does not indicate the depth to which it can be submerged.
Here are the general guidelines:
50 m = 5 atm = Shower resistance – it can be slightly wet.
100 m = 10 atm = Long term exposure to water, suitable for swimming or diving.
200 m = 20 atm = Pressure resistance, designed for scuba diving and scuba diving without equipment.
