What laptops it works with
Key condition: The laptop must have a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
This is standard on virtually every laptop, but not every USB-C supports it. Check the specification of your model.
How to check compatibility:
- DisplayPort symbol ("D" in square) next to the USB-C port on the laptop or in the specification: "DisplayPort Alt Mode" / "DP over USB-C" / "Video output"
- If your laptop charges via USB-C - Power Delivery works too
- If in doubt, we will help - we will confirm your model.
💡It happens that the USB-C port has no markings, even though it has this function.
Verified Purchase:
- Dell Latitude, XPS, Precision, Inspiron with USB-C
- Lenovo ThinkPad T/X/P, IdeaPad Slim, Yoga with USB-C DP Alt Mode
- Third-party business and consumer laptops that support USB-C DP Alt Mode
- Microsoft Surface Laptop and Surface Pro with USB-C port
- MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with USB-C (note below)
💬 Precision 7000 under load requires a 240 W power supply - you connect the Precision Dell power supply next to the station, WD15 then only docks.
💬 MacBook - macOS limitation: charging works, Ethernet works, USB ports work, but video via DP Alt Mode only supports 1 external monitor (not 2 as in Windows). For a two-monitor setup with a MacBook, you need a Thunderbolt station.

Work scenarios
🏠 Home office with one 4K monitor
You plug in one USB-C cable - you get a 4K@30Hz monitor, gigabit internet, keyboard, mouse, headphones and laptop charging. Comfortable for office work, sheets, browsing, video conferencing. For 4K@60 Hz you need a Thunderbolt station.
🏢 Office with two FHD monitors
Classics: HDMI to monitor No. 1, mDP to monitor No. 2 (via mDP-DP cable). Both at 1920×1080@60 Hz. Sheet on one, browser and messenger on the other.
🎓 Student with one laptop and monitor
A 14" laptop is convenient in a bag, but writing a thesis on a small screen is a nightmare. Station + 24" monitor + external keyboard = full home station. You come back from college, you plug in the cable - you have a desktop computer. You go out - laptop in backpack.
👨 👩 👧 Family with one laptop
Parents work during the day. In the evening, the station goes into "children's station" mode - the same monitor, the same keyboard, now connected to the child's laptop. One position, many users.
✈ Hot-desking (passing office)
You leave the WD15 on your desk in the office with monitors, keyboard and mouse. You come in, you plug in one USB-C cable - you have a station ready. A colleague after you plugs in his laptop and has the same configuration.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Is WD15 a Thunderbolt?
No. WD15 is a USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 1 with DP Alt Mode) station. The label "Thunderbolt" on some WD15 offers on Allegro is a mistake - K17A 452-BCCW does not have Thunderbolt. Max video bandwidth = DisplayPort 1.2. Just up to 2× FHD@60 Hz or 1× 4K@30 Hz.
❓ I have a market laptop (not a business laptop). Will it work?
Probably yes - provided the laptop has USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode support. This is standard in newer generation laptops also in the consumer segment. Check the specification: it should be "USB-C with DisplayPort" or "USB-C DP Alt Mode" or DP symbol next to the port. If the laptop charges via USB-C - Power Delivery works too. If in doubt, write.
❓ Why is there no power supply included?
Because Dell WD15 exists in two power variants: 130 W and 180 W. Dell sells stations without a power supply so that the customer can choose the power for his laptop. We have 180 W Dell power supplies in a separate offer - it is a safe option for every business laptop.
❓ What resolution will the monitors reach?
- 1× 4K monitor (3840×2160) @ 30 Hz - HDMI or mDP
- 2× FHD (1920×1080) @ 60 Hz monitors - most common configuration
- 1× QHD (2560×1440) @ 60 Hz + 1× FHD @ 60 Hz
- 3× SXGA (1280×1024) @ 60 Hz - rare but possible
For 4K@60 Hz you need a Thunderbolt station.
❓ Does WD15 work with MacBook?
Partially. Charging and Ethernet work. USB ports work. But video: macOS only supports 1 external monitor (not 2 as in Windows) through this station. For a dual-monitor MacBook, you need a Thunderbolt station.
❓ USB-C cable - permanent or replaceable?
Permanently. The cable comes out of the bottom of the station, about 50 cm long. It cannot be replaced - if you need more coverage, use the USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 extension cable up to 1-2 meters in addition.
❓ Do I need drivers?
Not on Windows 10/11 and macOS 11+. Plug-and-play. It is only worth checking in Dell Update if there is no newer version of the station firmware - 5 minutes of update, improves the stability of video in mixed modes. It works on Linux (kernel 5.4+), but some laptops require USB-C DP Alt Mode to be manually enabled in the BIOS.
Review photos:
A docking station can be a great gift idea. The mass of people do not know what it is, so they do not know that they need it... After a few days with her, it will quickly become an indispensable companion. I say this with full responsibility, supported by several years of experience :)
