Powerful 10 Gbps and Layer 3 routing solution for enterprise backbone and data center networks

PLANET GS-6311-16S8C4XR is a brand new managed Layer 3 gigabit switch with 10Gb/s uplink support for different types of web applications and flexible deployment. The GS-6311-16S8C4XR features 24 100/1000BASE-X SFP ports and 8 10/100/1000BASE-T RJ45 copper ports, shared with 1 to 8 ports, as well as 4 1G/10GBASE-X SFP+ ports with a 128 Gbps switch in a rugged 1U chassis.

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR delivers high performance, Layer 3 static routing, RIP (Routing Information Protocol) and OSPF (Open Shortest Path First). With 10 Gbps interfaces and a 128 Gbps switching structure, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR can handle very large amounts of data in a secure topology that connects to an enterprise backbone network or high-capacity servers. Powerful network security features make the GS-6311-16S8C4XR provide effective data traffic control for ISPs and enterprise VoIP applications, video streaming and multicasting.

High performance 10 Gbps Ethernet network

The four SFP+ ports built into the GS-6311-16S8C4XR boast a high-performance switch architecture that is capable of providing non-blocking switch structure and bandwidth up to 128 Gbps, greatly simplifying LAN upgrade tasks to meet growing bandwidth requirements. Each SFP+ port supports Dual-Speed, 10GBASE-SR/LR or 1000BASE-SX/LX, which means that an administrator can now flexibly select the appropriate SFP/SFP+ transceiver depending on the transmission distance or transmission speed required for efficient network expansion.

Redundant ring, fast recovery for critical network applications

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR supports redundant ring technology and features a strong, fast self-healing capability to prevent interruptions and external intrusions. It includes advanced ITU-T G.8032 ERPS (Ethernet Ring Protection Switching) technology and Spanning Tree Protocol (802.1s MSTP) in the client network to increase system reliability and runtime in harsh environments. On some simple Ring networks, the recovery time can be less than 15ms to quickly restore the network to normal operation.

Support for Layer 3 routing

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR enables an administrator to conveniently increase network performance by manually configuring Layer 3 static routing, automatic configuration of RIP (Routing Information Protocol), or OSPF (Open Shortest Path First).

• The RIP protocol can use the number of hops as a routing metric and prevent routing loops by implementing a limit on the number of hops allowed in the path from source to destination.
• OSPF is an internal dynamic routing protocol for a standalone system based on the state of the link. The protocol creates a database for the link state by exchanging link states between Layer 3 switches, and then uses the Shortest Path First algorithm to generate a route table based on that database.

Strong multicast

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR supports multiple multicast functions. In Layer 2 it has IPv4 IGMPv1/v2/v3 snooping and IPv6 MLD v1/v2 snooping functions. With its Multicast VLAN Register (MVR), receiver/multicast broadcaster control and detection of illegal multicast sources, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR is perfect for any robust network.

Full IPv6 support

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR provides IPv6 management and secure enterprise-level features such as SSH, ACL, WRR, and RADIUS authentication. In doing so, it helps enterprises enter the IPv6 era with the lowest investment. In addition, you don't need to replace network devices when you build an IPv6 FTTx edge network.

Solid Layer 2 features

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR can be programmed for basic switch management functions such as port speed configuration, port aggregation, VLAN, Multiple Spanning Tree protocol, bandwidth control and IGMP snooping. The switch provides VLAN functions with 802.1Q, Q-in-Q, voice VLAN and GVRP protocol tags. Supporting port aggregation, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR enables high-speed connection to multiple ports. Allows up to 64 groups for trunking with up to 8 ports for each group.

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR is equipped with powerful traffic management and WRR features to improve the services offered by telecommunications. WRR features include high-speed Layer 4 traffic classifiers and bandwidth constraints, which are particularly useful for multi-tenant entities, business units, Telco or network service applications. It also enables enterprises to take full advantage of limited network resources and guarantees the best VoIP and video conferencing.

Powerful network security

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR offers a comprehensive list of access controls (ACLs) from Layer 2 to Layer 4 to enforce security at the network edge. It can be used to restrict network access by rejecting packets based on source and destination IP addresses, TCP/UDP ports, or defined common network applications. The protection mechanism also includes port-based 802.1x user and device authentication, MAC and Web-based, which can be deployed with RADIUS to ensure port-level security and block illegal users.

Advanced IP network protection

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR also provides DHCP Snooping, IP Source Guard and Dynamic ARP Inspection features that prevent IP snooping attacks and reject ARP packets with an invalid MAC address. Network administrators can now build highly secure enterprise networks with much less time and effort than before.

Efficient and secure management

For efficient management, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR is equipped with console, network and SNMP management interfaces.

• With its built-in Web-based management interface, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR offers easy-to-use, platform-agnostic management and configuration features.
• Text management can be accessed through Telnet and the console port. To reduce product learning time, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR offers Cisco-like commands, and the customer doesn't need to learn new commands from these switches
• For standard monitoring and management software, it offers an SNMPv3 connection that encrypts the contents of packets during each session for secure remote management. In addition, the GS-6311-16S8C4XR offers secure remote management by supporting an SSHv2 connection that encrypts the contents of packets during each session.

The GS-6311-16S8C4XR supports SFP-DDM (Digital Diagnostic Monitor) function, which greatly helps the network administrator to easily monitor the parameters of SFP and SFP+ transceivers in real time, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser polarization current and transceiver supply voltage.
