How it all began

Founders of Bike Citizens: Daniel Kofler and Andreas Stückl.

Assuming Bike Citizens, our goal was to share the experience we gained as bicycle couriers and valuable knowledge about cycling around cities.

Founded in 2011 by two bicycle couriers as Bike City Guide, the company currently employs more than 30 people in the Austrian city of Graz and has its second branch in Berlin.

At the beginning, our work was focused on the development of the Bike Citizens application for bicycle navigation and Finn handles allowing for mounting on a smartphone on the bicycle handlebar and convenient use of the application.

Currently, the company’s activities are not only handles and applications, but also: tools for GPS data analysis for cities, evaluation of bicycle infrastructure projects, support for companies promoting cycling, campaigns promoting cycling as a means of transport in cities and publishing the urban bicycle magazine Urban Independance.

Routing profile:

It adapts to your individual needs. Choose a fast, pleasant or optimal route.

In your Premium account, you also have the option of routing routes with multiple intermediate points.

Altitude profile:

the application will plan the route taking into account the appropriate degree of inclination.

Greater or lesser tolerance is permissible depending on the selected route profile and type of bike.

Bicycle type:

The route is determined taking into account your needs. You can choose whether you prefer asphalt roads (e.g. Riding a road bike), or you are riding an electric bike and e.g. You accept more demanding climbs.

Type of surface:

the application will lead the route on asphalt roads or roads with worse surface if you accept them.

Online and offline function:

Once you’ve downloaded the app, you can start planning your routes online and navigating right away. If you want to ensure the functionality of the application even without an Internet connection or want to avoid roaming costs, you can also download the map and use it offline (Premium account required).

Free Premium Zone:

Select your Premium Zone on the map, i.e. 7km diameter area and use the Premium function free of charge: planning routes with multiple stops, downloading an offline map, navigation using voice messages and many other functions.

Do I have to pay for using the app?

The Bike Citizens can be downloaded for free from the iOS App Store and Google Play. The basic functions (tracking, route planning without intermediate points, navigation without voice messages, travel review) can be used immediately free of charge. In addition, you can create a personal Premium Zone for free to enjoy the many additional features of the app. Convince yourself of the features of the app and if you want to use them all without restrictions, you can purchase access to your Premium account.

What are the benefits of a free Premium Zone?

The free Premium Zone is a self-selected area with a diameter of 7 km. This area can be defined free of charge only once. In this area, you can use many premium features, such as route planning with intermediate points, navigation using voice messages, downloading offline maps, setting tags. If the features of the app convince you and you want to use them all without restrictions around the world, buy access to a Premium account.

What are the benefits of a Premium Account?

With a Premium account, you can use all the features of the cycling app around the world: route planning with any number of intermediate points, online navigation with voice messages, downloading maps for route planning and offline navigation, extensive personalization of applications and settings, individual tags for saved trips.

How do I download an offline map?

To download offline maps, click the map symbol (with arrow) in the map view to go to the map overview. The free 7 km diameter Premium Zone, as well as other sponsored (free) maps can be easily downloaded at any time. If you have a Premium account, you can download any section of the map at any time (max. 50 x 50 km or 1 GB of data).

What are the options for personalizing the route?

When planning a route, you can customize it to your personal needs, using different settings (e.g. electric bike, running the route only on asphalt roads, shortcuts). You can also choose your preferred route from the different routes suggested.

How does the choice of route profile affect the routing?

Choosing a route profile affects the length of detours to avoid sections less cycling-friendly (e.g. streets with a lot of traffic).

The EASY (easy) profile attaches great importance to the choice of bicycle routes or side streets with low traffic. If possible, alternative routes are preferred, which allow you to avoid “inconvenient” road sections – even if it slightly extends the journey.

The FAST (fast) profile is aimed at experienced cyclists who feel safe on lanes open to vehicles. The fastest calculated route will not necessarily be the shortest if it misses sharp turns in this way.

The BALANCED profile is an intermediate between the other two profiles and is aimed at intermediate-advanced cyclists who want to reach their destination without too much detours, but at the same time relatively stress-free.

What is travel recording for?

1. Travel logging allows you to chronologically view your travels on your bike - including in visual form presented as your personal heat map. On the one hand, this should motivate people to get on the bike even more regularly, and on the other - through visual presentation - show how well the bike works as an urban means of transport.
2. With a sufficiently large database, you can obtain a lot of valuable information about the cycling infrastructure in the city. Data can be used e.g. to better assess where infrastructure improvements are most needed or where traffic lights need to be better coordinated. For this reason, we provide data generated by users of the application in anonymous form for urban planners and research projects.
3. You can also use the recorded data to improve the routing function of the Bike Citizens application. For example, you can calculate the average waiting time at intersections and optimize route proposals accordingly.

Can I turn off travel logging?

Yes, you can activate and deactivate travel recording at any time in the app settings.

When will my trips be recorded?

If you have travel logging enabled in your app settings, your trips will be recorded both when using the navigation function and your bike computer.

What information is stored?

The following information is periodically collected along the route travelled: position, timestamp, current GPS accuracy, altitude and direction according to the compass sensor. For each trip, the following information is also transmitted: serial number generated randomly during the installation of the application (to be able to assign different trips), smartphone model, operating system version, application version and time (e.g. at the beginning and end of the tour).

How is the data stored?

Location data is stored in a personalized manner on our servers. This means that individual journeys are associated with login credentials and can then be viewed in a personalized view on the dashboard. The transfer of personalized data between your smartphone or computer and our servers is always encrypted. In addition, the password is stored in encrypted form (with "salt") in the server database. The database servers are located in Germany or Austria.

What happens to the information collected?

The collected data is used for the following purposes:

• Statistical and visual preparation for personal and aggregated previews
• Analyzing data to get information for improved routing
• creating personalized and aggregated visualizations (e.g. one year of pedal power)
• calculation of aggregated data (e.g. at city level) and their presentation on websites
• mini dashboard in the app

In the plans:

• downloaded data in GPX format (and possibly in other formats)

Will my information be passed on to third parties?

In general, we do not pass on any data to third parties, except for projects that directly or indirectly benefit our users - for example, by improving cycling infrastructure (e.g. transfer of aggregated data to municipal authorities to identify points for expansion) or by improving routing/navigation (see e.g. our BikeWave research project). When transferring data to third parties, the stored data is generally anonymous. The data is not transferred for advertising purposes.

When will my trips be submitted and how much data is there?

Your journeys are automatically transferred when you arrive at your destination or when you manually complete the recording. You can set whether data transfer should only take place with an existing WLAN connection or with a mobile data connection ("Download policy" setting). If the sending does not occur immediately, the saved journey will of course not be lost, but a retry will be made the next time the application is launched. The amount of data to be sent per trip depends on several variables, in particular the duration of the trip. Experience shows that the amount of data is less than 10 KB per minute of travel.
