Unsaturated fatty acids n-3 and n-6 are essential components of dog food, because there is no possibility of their synthesis in the body. Polyunsaturated fatty acid with outstanding health-promoting properties is conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). CLA acid has a number of valuable dietary, preventive and medicinal properties. Studies on dogs have shown that it can prevent the formation and also inhibit the development of cancer (including prostate cancer). In addition, it stimulates the immune system. CLA is also effective in treating atopic dermatitis (AD) in dogs. Ruminant meat contains far more CLA than monogastric animal meat. This is due to the fact that CLA is formed mainly in the processes of bacterial biohydrogenation of linoleic acid in the rumen (the most important of pregastrics in ruminants).
