How to Assess a Healthy Dog Weight
A healthy weight of a dog does not depend solely on the number of kilograms on the weight. A more effective way is to observe the silhouette and physical condition of the animal. One of the most commonly used tools is the 5-point body condition assessment scale (BCS), which, although subjective, is reliable and predictable (German et al., 2005).
Evaluation of body condition
The BCS scale is as follows:
- 1 – 2 – slimming, very slim figure
- 3 – optimal weight
- 4 to 5 – overweight or obese
Ideally,:
- The dog's ribs are easily felt, covered with a thin layer of fat,
- The waist and chinped belly are visible,
- The dog is active, able to jump and move freely.
Overweight dogs have a distinct layer of fat on their ribs, brak clear waist, and a wider silhouette.
Maintaining correct body weight in dogs is crucial for their long-term health and daily comfort. Clinical studies show that up to 65% of dogs are overweight or obese. Too high body weight can negatively affect health, increasing the risk of disease, limiting fitness, shortening life expectancy and worsening its quality.
The weight of the dog is affected by many factors, such as the amount of food consumed, the level of physical activity, castration, gender, metabolism or genetics. Although overweight in dogs is a complex problem, a properly balanced diet can be an important part of the solution, helping caregivers keep their pets in healthy condition.
Why is it worth combining weight control with care for healthy joints?
Wearing excessive body weight increases joint strain in both humans and dogs. Such additional pressure may over time weaken and damage joint structures, which makes it difficult for the dog to move freely, and sometimes also leads to usability.
When a dog is overweight, the extra weight overloads his joint. This can lead to pain and discomfort, making the animal less active. The decrease in activity causes the dog to burn less calories, which in turn can cause further weight gain, exacerbating the whole problem.
Joint inflammation is an extremely common condition in dogs. It is estimated that it affects about 20% of dogs from 1. year of life, and as many as 90% of dogs over 5. year of life struggles with this disease
