Bacillus coagulans, originally known as Latobacillus sporogenes , was discovered in 1933. It is a probiotic bacteria that has been naturally microencapsulated for stability. Importantly, Bacillus coagulans produces only lactic acid in the L+ form, which is the only biologically active form of this compound.

These beneficial bacteria multiply in the digestive tract where they can exert their positive effects. The optimal conditions for the growth of Bacillus coagulans are a temperature between 30°C and 37°C, and an optimal pH between 5.5 and 6.2.
