Niacin vs. Nicotinamide

Niacin is a water-soluble compound, classified as B vitamins, sometimes also called vitamin B3 or vitamin PP (the latter name comes from a disease resulting from a deficiency of this vitamin, i.e. from pellagra). It occurs mainly in two chemical forms – as nicotinic acid or in a form of nicotinic acid amide (nicotinamide, eng. niacinamide) Both forms of vitamin B3 are two closely related compounds, differing in the presence of only one functional group.

Similar to other B vitamins, niacin is responsible for a number of functions related to energy metabolism and the proper functioning of the nervous system – its intake can contribute to the improvement of psychological functions as well as to the reduction of fatigue and fatigue. In addition, niacin helps maintain the proper condition of the skin and mucous membranes, helping to maintain their health and well-being.

The main source of both forms of niacin is diet, and to a lesser extent also the synthesis taking place in the body. Interestingly, in plant products (grain bran, legumes, peanuts, spinach) it occurs mainly in the form of nicotinic acid, while in products of animal origin (poultry and pork meat, liver) the form of nicotinamide and its derivatives (NAD and NADP) dominates.

Understanding the difference between niacin and nicotinamide may seem confusing given the similarity of chemical names and terms. There are some critical differences between the two components:

Niacin, taken as pure nicotinic acid, is characterized by much better bioavailability than nicotinamide. This means that nicotinic acid is absorbed to a greater extent and faster by the body.
