Shilajit is a natural biological substance native to the Himalayas. It usually separates in hot weather, appearing in dry places, sheltered from wind and sun, on rocks built mainly of limestone granites.

Mumio contains inorganic and organic compounds (hydrocarbon transformation products, petroleum products) and plant remains (m.in. mulberries and juniper), algae and lichens that, getting into the cracks of rocks, form dead organic matter. It is in the form of nuggets or crystals with a consistency of tar or resin. It takes on a color from yellow-brown, through brown, to black. The word mumio in Greek means to protect, to purify.
