On 24. October 1959, the first and so far the only series-produced in Poland mechanical watches came off the assembly line of Zakłady Mechaniczno-Precise Błonie, in Błonie near Warsaw. The initial ones, marked with the Błonie brand, had a small inscription: “SUSSR LICENSE”, but in each subsequent one our familiar inscription was proudly presented: “MADE IN POLAND”
The fact of the appearance of the first watches assembled from parts supplied by the Soviet Union, on its first page in a short note with a photo noted even the "organ of the working people" - the most important national newspaper, i.e. the party Tribune of the People. This was in its 25th edition. October 1959.
More information about the secrets of production in this newspaper was found two days later - 27. October.
Open and secret
The launch of watch production in Błonie near Warsaw was, on the one hand, the way to the economic development of the country, but what was never discussed was also a way to mask the development of special production intended for the army.
The concentration of civilian and military production under one roof was a natural form of industrial organization, especially in turbulent years, so of course it was also present in our country during the “cold war” period. This solution was a kind of symbiosis of these two types of production.
Civil production allowed to naturally acquire modern technologies (including licensing solutions), train technicians and engineers, and freely expand the machine park. It is also no secret that such coexisting civilian departments of each of these types of plants could possibly be switched to the production of products expected by the army at any time.
Form of industrialization of the country
It should be noted that for every state functioning at that time, especially the country in the process of industrialization, the construction of the watchmaking industry, or similar to it, was of significant economic importance. According to the principles of this economy, the profitability of production, especially in the case of possible export of manufactured products, is the greater the so-called “mental contribution” (rather than material) to the manufacturing process.
In this context, Bolesław Bierut’s call for the ninth Plenum of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party was also accepted, calling for the launch of in Poland production of cameras and wristwatches. [1]
License as a way of development
Having no tradition or professional experience in the production of watches, the best way to launch such a “fabrication” was to purchase an appropriate license. Despite the great appreciation for watches from the country of Helvetians, the choice of the licensor was predetermined. In this respect, the policy did not allow a licensing partner other than the Soviet Union.
At the same time, it must be admitted that the Soviet watch industry, thanks to the purchase by Soviet Russia, in the thirties of the previous century of mechanisms and parts for watches, as well as Lip machines and technologies, provided itself with a good basis for their production. Post-war scientific and technical development, with a strong emphasis on precision industry, allowed the Russians to take a good position among watch manufacturers.
A confirmation of the great commitment to the watch industry was the creation of a single, strong design center. The Scientific and Research Institute of the Clock Industry in Moscow (NiCzasProm - Научно-исследовательский Институт Часовой Промышленности СССР), was a leading plant in the industry, which meant that it was he who prepared the designs of all new mechanisms intended for production in each of the plants, and gave opinions on any proposed changes. An example of a modern mechanism of Russian own construction was the one – known as “Kirowska”, which by license purchased a plant in Błonie.
Negotiation, purchase and implementation of licenses
As the participants of the negotiations passed, only thanks to their cunning they managed to acquire a license of this modern and according to the Soviet side of the development mechanism marked as caliber 2408. The licensing agreement signed in 1956 agreed to submit changes to the documentation (which the licensor unfortunately did not provide).
Engineer Kazimierz Żelazkiewicz - "father of watch production in Błonie", learned about the changes in production parameters introduced for the watch purchased by license in May 1960, during his stay at the First Moscow Watch Factory in Moscow, producing these mechanisms. At that time, tools for the production of parts of mechanisms and the first batches of elements manufactured according to the “zero” mechanism project were ready in Błonie!
The license from the Council was not cheap. “For 1 sheet, A 4 size, we paid 4,20 rb. (1 rb. = $0,92. USA). At that time, the average monthly wage in the USSR was below 100 rb. “Additionally, there were communication problems, because the documents were prepared by the institute (NiCzasProm) and used by the factory (IMFZ). [2]
It is likely that the Russians did not suspect that the implementation of the license and the production of our own mechanisms could succeed.
The first watches
The first watches - including those from October 1959 - were assembled from parts 100% from the Soviet Union.
However, the plans of Polish engineers were much more ambitious. The mechanism is a “thicker matter” and it took time to master its production, but the dial, hands, case and lace (tension head) produced at the plant in Błonie appeared in the next series of watches.
“Father of the Polish mechanism” – engineer Kazimierz Żelazkiewicz
Kazimierz Żelazkiewicz appeared in Błonie in 15. July 1959. It seems that at that time he was the only in Poland who could successfully undertake the task of launching this type of production.
Before World War II, engineer Żelazkiewicz ran his own company producing electric clocks (mechanical clocks were also offered), and cameras (licensed). Immediately after the war, engineer Żelazkiewicz started production at the Łódź Clock Factory (later Mera Poltik) and was its first director. He also worked at the Warsaw Photo-Optic Works to remove the design error of the camera shutter.
Polish mechanism
Production of the first test batch of 1000 units of own production mechanisms the plant undertook until 15 December 1961.
We did it!!!
With the efforts of engineers, “artists from the tool shop” and the entire plant crew, all parts were manufactured and the first complete mechanisms were assembled. In them only the drive spring, hairspring and bearing stones came from imports from the USSR.
On November 30, 1961, engineer Żelazkiewicz handed the plant director a palette of the last 10 pieces, from a batch of over 1000 watches from parts of his own production.
The task of launching the production of Polish mechanisms has been completed!
Implementation of the license and “Polish-Soviet Friendship”
Błonia employees were happy to inform their “companions” from the Moscow factory about the successful implementation of the license. They were probably frightened by the threats to their own industry. Already in March 1962, the Błonie plant received an order to stop the production of its own movements and the production of watches only on the basis of parts of mechanisms supplied from the USSR.
Such a decision “slit the wings” of the committed and proud of its achievement crew of the plant. When excluding the production of the mechanism, it was also impossible to talk about any development work related to it.
Unnecessary machines and tools
As a result of such a political decision, specialized and specially manufactured tools became useless, and a significant part of the purchased machines did not apply in the plant.
In this way, the money allocated for the purchase of modern machinery and equipment was largely thrown into the mud. It should also be noted that the purchases carried out bypassing the embargo (by Luxembourg and Vienna) were extremely expensive.
Given as an example, the multi-spindle machine for machining the main plates of the mechanism did not even have a zero-start preservation and start-up, and later it was probably sold to the Soviet Union.
Press about watches from Błonia
The purchase of licenses, assembly of watches from Soviet parts, and in particular the implementation of licenses and production of the Polish mechanism were the reason for the intensity of publications in the daily press, technical magazines and even in the Polish Film Chronicle.
However, this topic was drastically cut off in the mass media at the time of the ban on the production of Polish mechanisms. Such silence was harmful because also in society the knowledge about watches from Błonie was negligible, and the achievements of Polish engineers were forgotten.
Names of watches from Błonia
Little is known about the source of patriotic and national sounding names of watch models. The exception, of course, is the first name - "Błonie", which was selected from proposals sent to the competition announced in the press. Names: Błonie Super and Blonex, were certainly fashionable for the time of their appearance on watch faces alterations to modern and pro-export counterparts. The name Blonex Antimagnetic was derived from the requirements of this watch at the production stage.
About the source of the origin of other names of watch models, that is: Alfa, Arras, Atlas, Baltic, Dolphin, Dukat, Jantar, Kurant, Lech, Polans, Wars, Zodiac unfortunately nothing is known.
Completion of watch production
In 1968, the production of watches was extinguished, and the last batch of them in the number of 1700 pieces, addressed to officers of the Polish aviation was produced in 1969.
Over a million watches from Błonia and knowledge about them
During a decade of watch production in Błonie, over 1,2 million watches came off the assembly tapes of the plant. At the time of their appearance on the market, they were competitive for the dominant Soviet products. After the end of production, and especially as a result of the quartz revolution, watch products from Błonie went into complete oblivion.
Wider interest in watches from Błonie was due to the grouping of people looking for knowledge about these watches on the discussion forum of the Club of Clock and Watch Lovers, which was already functioning at that time. In addition, it was also important to publish the memoirs of engineer Kazimierz Żelazkiewicz, and the books: Professor Zdzisław Mrugalski “Clock Industry in Poland” and the history of the plant in Błonie by Mr. Jerzy Bezpałko.
Another important step for the increase in interest and promotion of knowledge about watches from Błonie was the first exhibition of these watches, which took place in the salon from Time to Time in Warsaw’s Złote Tarasy in 2010. Its natural consequence was the book of the author of this study: “Stop: Watch. Watches and balance attachments from Błonia”. This item has become an indispensable guide for all collectors of watches from Błonie and people interested in the subject.
