D-mannose is a six-carbon simple sugar found naturally in the human body, as well as in some plants and fruits. Mannose resembles glucose in its structure. Subtle differences in the spatial configuration of both compounds, however, make them have different properties.

Unlike glucose, which is absorbed quickly and directly, mannose must first be converted into fructose and then into glucose. Thanks to this, mannose causes a much weaker insulin response, has a low glycemic index and has minimal effect on blood sugar levels.

D-mannose and urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections are a common ailment, occurring especially in women. Their urinary tract has a slightly different structure than male ones and thus they are more susceptible to bacterial infections.
