What is selenium and why is it important for the body?

Selenium is an essential trace element that the body needs in very small amounts, but its role is absolutely crucial for health. It is an integral component of many enzymes and proteins (so-called. selenoprotein), which corresponds to m.in. for:

❤ protection of cells against oxidative stress,

❤ proper functioning of the thyroid gland,

❤ immune system support,

❤ maintaining healthy hair and nails,

❤ and the correct course of spermatogenesis.

Selenium must be supplied with a diet because the organism cannot produce it on its own. Unfortunately, in Europe (including in Poland) soils are poor in selenium, which translates into a low content of this element in plant food, and thus – shortages in the population.

Proven and proven effects of selenium

The effects of selenium have been thoroughly tested and approved by the European Agency for Selenium. Food Safety (EFSA) and the European Commission.

Selen supports the body on many levels, m.in.:

✅ Maintaining healthy hair and nails – Selen helps maintain the good condition of hair and nails, supporting their growth, structure and resistance to damage. Selenium deficiency can lead to brittleness, hair loss or weakening of nails. [1]

✅ Proper functioning of the thyroid gland – Selenium is involved in the production and transformation of thyroid hormones (e.g. T4→ T3) and protects the thyroid gland from oxidative stress. It is crucial for people with thyroid problems, e.g. Hashimoto's. [2]

✅Proper functioning of the immune system – Selenium supports immunity by activating enzymes and immune cells. It protects the body against viruses and infections, especially during periods of weakening of the body. [3]

Selenium unequal - which form is the best?

An organic, naturally occurring form of selenium, which is characterized by excellent bioavailability and a high level of incorporation into the body's proteins is L-selenomethionia.

What distinguishes L-selenomethionine?

✔ This is an organic form, naturally occurring in food, mainly in vegetable proteins (e.g. in cereals).

✔ It absorbs just like the amino acid methionine – that is, very effectively. Thanks to this, the body easily absorbs it and can build directly into its own proteins.

✔ Long-term operation – it is stored in the body and used when it is needed.

✔ It is the best studied form of selenium, used in clinical trials and recommended by specialists.

✔ Each capsule contains a precisely defined amount of pure, active selenium – without additives, without the risk of deficiency or excess.

And other forms?

❌ Selenium from yeast – although also organic, contains a mixture of various forms of selenium, of which only part is selenomethionine. Assimilation is good, but it can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Additionally, people with yeast intolerance or allergies should watch out for it.

❌ Sodium selenite and sodium selenate – these are inorganic forms of selenium, which often go to the cheapest supplements. Their bioavailability is low, they work shorter and are not stored in the body. Moreover, with an overdose, they can be less tolerated, so they are not recommended for long-term use.

Inulin (from chicory root), selenium (L-selenomethionine); capsule (shell component - hydroxypropylcellulose).

Method of use

Recommended daily intake: 1 capsule, preferably during or immediately after a meal. Drink a glass of water. Avoid sipping coffee, tea and other drinks containing tannins.

Do not exceed the recommended portion for consumption during the day. A dietary supplement cannot be used as a substitute (replacement) for a varied diet. A healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet are recommended.
