Curcuminoids are the main bioactive components found in the roots of turmeric (Curcumalonga), a plant belonging to the ginger family. Turmeric has been used for centuries as a coloring and flavoring agent in South Asian cuisines. For thousands of years, it has also been recommended by traditional Ayurvedic herbalists.

Numerous beneficial effects attributed to the root of turmeric are associated with the antioxidant properties of curcumin contained in it.
