NAC is a highly absorbable form of cysteine. Cysteine is an amino acid, which is one of the molecules that are part of proteins. Our body can produce it itself from other amino acids: methionine and serine, if they are not lacking. However, cysteine supplemented additionally in the form of NAC brings interesting health benefits, which is why it has been used in medicine for years. Some of its properties are already well documented, and many others are being studied.

DetoxN-acetylcysteine is widely used in medicine for several reasons. First of all, it is given in the case of an overdose of paracetamol – NAC helps to detoxify the liver (from this, as well as from other substances) and prevents the destruction of this organ. It is also safe to operate, well tolerated and inexpensive.

NAC is valued for stimulating the synthesis of glutathione, for which it is one of the substrates. Glutathione is the strongest intracellular antioxidant, as well as an ingredient necessary for the formation of lymphocytes that protect the body from unwanted guests. It occurs in all cells of the body, and its largest amounts are found in the liver and kidneys. It is the most important factor responsible for detoxifying cells. When it is missing, the liver undergoes necrosis and the cells undergo apoptosis (programmed death). Glutathione is cyclically reconstituted from cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid. In the case of serious poisoning, its resynthesis may turn out to be insufficient and that is when NAC is used.

N-acetylcysteine is also a mucolytic agent, i.e. one that thins mucus formed in the airways. It also supports the expectoration of residual mucus, as well as reduces its production.
