Preliminary studies show that monolaurin effectively deactivates viruses by destroying their lipid mantle. In addition, it kills a wide spectrum of bacteria and fungi of the genus Candida. Clinical trials in humans have not yet been conducted, but the results of in vitro studies and animal experiments are very promising. In the US, monolaurin is already quite a popular supplement, and the FDA, the US Commission on Monolaurin. Food and Drugs, she classified it as GRAS compounds, i.e. completely safe.

Research on the properties of monolaurin began in 1966. At the beginning, this compound served as a preservative for food, as well as a surface decontamination agent in food industry plants and hospitals. Over time, they became interested in its impact on the most serious viruses that attack humans, such as HIV, HSV or measles virus. Today, researchers hope that monolaurin can become a modern antiviral and antibacterial drug that can cope with the resistance that microbes develop to antibiotics.

Are coconut products, as a source of monolaurin, healthy? :)

It should be clarified here that monolaurin does not occur in coconuts as such, but comes from the transformation of lauric acid. It is lauric acid that is abundant in coconuts, and the largest amounts of it are found in oil, cream and coconut shavings. By eating coconut products, we provide ourselves with lauric acid, which in our body is converted into monolaurin. But it is not yet known what mechanism is behind it, or what portion of coconut should be eaten to get a therapeutic dose of monolaurin from it. Preliminary suggestions say about 100-300 ml of coconut oil (1 cup is 250 ml), which rather excludes the possibility of daily supply of an effective dose of monolaurin from natural sources.

Health-promoting properties:

Studies conducted so far have shown that monolaurin has the ability to destroy and inactivate:

• Haemophilus influenzae responsible for respiratory infections and meningitis

An additional advantage of monolaurin is that bacteria cannot become resistant to it. This was demonstrated by a study by Carpo et al., which tested the sensitivity of several different strains of pathogenic bacteria to monolaurin and classic antibiotics. The growth of each strain was inhibited by the presence of monolaurin, and none of them developed resistance to it.

Moreover, monolaurin is thought to act as an immunosuppressant in autoimmune diseases. In the experiment Zhang et al. monolaurin inhibited human T-limocytes activity and proinflammatory cytokine production. The authors of the study conclude that monolaurin has great therapeutic potential as a factor inhibiting autoimmune and reducing inflammation, which in the future can be used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.
