Properties:

Berberine is the most valuable ingredient in barberry, obtained from its fruits, leaves, bark and roots. It is a bioactive substance belonging to the group of alkaloids.

One potential mechanism leading to disease development is overexpression of DNA-methyltransferase I (DNMT1) enzyme. This may affect the interference of gene expression that encodes the anti-oncogene i.a. p53 protein. In the human body, proteina53 is responsible for apoptosis and leads to repair of genetic material. The meta-analysis confirms that berberine has a very similar therapeutic effect in the case of type II diabetics, hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol and triglycerides), increased pressure. However, taking berberine is not associated with unpleasant side effects.
