HCA (hydroxycitric acid) is a substance obtained from the fruit of the Garcinia cambodgia tree. HCA inhibits the synthesis of fat from carbohydrates and proteins and thus the formation of spare body fat. Hydroxycitric acid blocks the enzyme citrate lyase, which is responsible for providing acetyl groups for the synthesis of fatty acids in cells. These groups come from citrate, which is involved in the energy transformation of carbohydrates and proteins.
