Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is a derivative of citric acid that is found in a variety of plants, including tropical Garcinia cambogia and Hibiscus subdariffa.
There are four isomers, (+) - and (-) - hydroxycitric acid, and (+) - and (-) - allo-hydroxy citric acid. Hydrochloride (-) - hydroxycitric acid isomer is found in Garcinia.
biological action
(-) - HCA is a competitive inhibitor of ATP-citrate lyase that converts oxaloacetate citrate and acetyl-CoA. The reverse of this conversion is a stage in the citric acid cycle.
Laboratory animal studies and HCA have produced results that indicate the possibility of modulating lipid metabolism. However, clinical studies have shown that HCA has the effect of losing weight or reducing body fat mass. A meta-analysis published in 2010 showed that gastrointestinal adverse effects were twice as likely to affect users of hydroxycitric acid. The use of HCA is contraindicated in patients suffering from colitis or inflammatory bowel disease.
One HCA isomer, known as (2 S, 3 R)-HCA inhibits the pancreas of alpha-amylase and intestine alpha-glucosidase, leading to a decrease in carbohydrate metabolism in vitro. In a study in Zucker rats that are genetically predisposed to obesity, Garcinia Cambogia extract containing HCA showed that high doses lead to significant inhibition of the epidididymis of fat accumulation, but also high testicular toxicity. However, this study has been criticized for possible HCA contamination used in various design flaws.
