HMB, or hydroxymethylbutyrate, is a product of the breakdown of the essential amino acid leucine and is produced in the human body. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which in turn are the building blocks of muscles. HMB can also be obtained from food (e.g. citrus fruits, avocado, cauliflower, sum). To reach a dose of 3 g of HMB per day, you need to consume 600 g of high-quality protein.

It has been shown that HMB supplementation reduces the breakdown of muscle proteins (anticatabolic effect) and supports the building of muscle mass (anabolic effect). In addition, it provides less muscle damage and faster muscle recovery after high-intensity exercise.
