What is saffron?

Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world obtained from the birthmarks of cultivated crocus posts (Crocus sativus). It has the form of characteristic orange-red threads with a slightly tart taste and smell resembling freshly cut grass, with a noticeable hint of honey and sandalwood. How does saffron work?

The use of saffron does not end only with culinary values. What standardization and origin of the extract?

When deciding to buy saffron, whether in the form of a spice or a dietary supplement, you need to be careful and be vigilant, because due to its high price, there is a lot of counterfeit material on the market. In the case of dietary supplements, it is also worth paying attention to the standardization and origin of the extract. Products available on the market are often based on extracts with low standardization or non-standardized, or simply on dried, powdered plant material, having a much lower content of active ingredients.

Saffron extract SafraSOL™ contained in our product is obtained exclusively from the birthmarks of cultivated crocuse (Crocus sativus), comes from a reputable Spanish manufacturer and is characterized by very high, double standardization for 10% crocin and 2% safranal. To determine the effectiveness of saffron as an antidepressant, the researchers conducted a clinical review of six studies involving 230 adults (118 women and 112 men) aged 18 to 60 years with moderately severe depressive disorder. Two studies compared the effectiveness of saffron with placebo, and the other four compared the effectiveness of saffron with antidepressants.

Two randomized, double-blind studies compared the effects of 30 mg saffron per day with placebo, compared with placebo, saffron showed significant therapeutic effects.

Four randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies compared the effects of 30 mg saffron daily with therapeutic doses of two antidepressants, fluoxetine (20 mg/day) and imipramine (100 mg/day). The results of the study indicate that saffron is much more effective than placebo and shows efficacy comparable to the tested synthetic antidepressants – imipramine and fluoxetine.
