The pharmacokinetic profiles of silibinin plasma concentrations were investigated in a clinical trial conducted by Gnosis. Phosphocomplex® is a proprietary bioavailable Silibin in the form of a lipid-compatible active compound in which Silibin has been complexed with phospholipids Silibin is the richest and strongest component of silymarin, the most active component of the milk thistle plant (Silybum marianum), which has been extensively studied for its health benefits. Through its action, Silibin contained in Phosphocomplex® has the ability to protect and normalize liver function, also promoting glutathione production. Unfortunately, Silibin has poor intestinal absorption and low bioavailability. In Phosphocomplex® phospholipid complexation Silibinin occurs together with phosphatidylcholine, which is an important emulsifier in the gastrointestinal tract and improves the ability of Silibin to pass through lipid-rich biological membranes and achieve circulation, resulting in increased bioavailability. The increased bioavailability of Phosphocomplex® has been tested compared to a preparation purchased on the nutraceutical market and used as a reference product.

Phospocomplex® is obtained by complexing silibinin with phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine) to significantly improve bioavailability. Phospocomplex® proved that the complexation reaction with phosphatidylcholine improved the bidability of silibinin (which is difficult to absorb in the gut) when added orally. Increased bioavailability is associated with a higher passage of Phospocomplex® through the mucous membrane of the digestive system.
