D-ribose is a five-carbon simple sugar belonging to aldoses, i.e. monosaccharides with an aldehyde group. Despite the similarity in structural structure and belonging to the same group of compounds, D-ribose has different properties and performs different functions in the body from standard sugars such as glucose, fructose or sucrose.

ATP – Energy – Metabolism

The energy supplied in food undergoes metabolic changes, i.e. multi-stage transformation and distribution, to eventually be transformed into ATP, which is the main energy carrier in biochemical reactions occurring in mitochondria, called the process of cellular respiration. ATP is therefore the basic form of energy available directly to every cell of the body.

D-ribose occurs naturally in the body as one of the components of ATP.

During intense exercise, e.g. during training, oxygen levels decrease in the cells and energy deficiencies appear. Then the demand for ATP increases, which begins to be intensively consumed, as a result of which the body renews energy resources. However, the result is also a depletion of ATP stocks.

Therefore, after the training, it is important to renew ATP resources and supplementation with D-ribose may be helpful.

D-ribose as a “keto sweetener”

D-ribose is a compound that can be successfully used as a sweetener by people on a ketogenic diet. Although it is also sugar and has a sweet taste, unlike traditional sugar such as glucose or sucrose, does not raise blood glucose levels.

Unlike standard 6-carbon sugars such as glucose, D-ribose is a 5-carbon sugar, i.e. pentose. Therefore, despite its similar calorific value to glucose (4kcal/g), D-ribose is a very poor fuel for the body. This is because cells have a number of safeguards that prevent D-ribose from being “wasted” as a direct fuel such as glucose. The body therefore distinguishes D-ribose from other carbohydrates and directs this important sugar where it is actually needed.
