Indian Incense (Boswellia serrata) is a small deciduous tree of the plasma family (Burseraceae), quite commonly found in India, other species of the Boswellia variety are also found in the Arabian Peninsula, Africa and China.
The source of obtaining active substances produced by the plant is an oleoresin called incense/olibanum. The resin is obtained by cutting the bark of the tree and then drying the resulting exudate. The resulting crystals are still used as incense – hence the name of the plant.
Incense resin is one of the oldest herbs known in Ayurveda, it was also used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The most important active ingredient in Indian frankincense resin is boswellic acids – compounds belonging to triterpenes.
