A near-infrared helmet is a device based on the principle of photobiomodulation. It has a positive effect on three types of brain diseases:

a) traumatic events (stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral ischemia),

b) degenerative disease (dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease)

c) and mental disorders (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder).

There are many examples of photochemical reactions caused by light in biological systems. Our vision is based on the interaction of light with photosensitive cells in our retinas, called photoreceptors. When light is absorbed by these cells, a photochemical reaction occurs that converts light energy into electrical signals that are transmitted to visual processing centers in the brain. The synthesis of vitamin D in our skin is another example of a photochemical reaction. When the wavelength of ultraviolet B (UVB) in sunlight falls on our skin, it converts the common form of cholesterol, 7-dehydrocholesterol, into vitamin D3. The negative effects of lack of light on the human body are also well known. Two examples include seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and brak vitamin D production leading to rickets.

It is a term used to describe the mechanistic/scientific basis of this photonic specialty, and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) as a term for its therapeutic application. PBMT was first developed in the 60s. XX century. In the early years, this emerging photonics application was plagued by a number of problems, including inconsistent terminology. A number of terms have been introduced, such as biostimulation, cold/cold laser, low power laser therapy, soft laser and low power laser therapy. On the basis of a recent consensus in this area, PBMs and PBMTs are now considered terms of choice. In 2015, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Praveen Arany, PBMT was added to the National Library of Medicine MeSH database as an entry date into the existing low-level laser therapy record. In conclusion, PBM and PBMT are accurate and specific terms for this effective and important therapeutic application of light.

In photobiomodulation, the light source is placed close to the skin or in contact with the skin, which allows light energy (photons) to penetrate into tissues where it interacts with chromophores found in cells, resulting in photophysical and photochemical changes that lead to changes at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels of the body. Light induces a complex chain of physiological responses in diseased and damaged tissues to accelerate wound healing and tissue regeneration, increase circulation, reduce acute inflammation, reduce acute and chronic pain, and help restore normal cell function. Interestingly, recent studies indicate that light can improve performance in normal tissues and cells.
