The idea of the Foundation was born during long discussions about Polish industry, design and products.
The creators of the foundation realized that although in Poland many products are created, few of them were invented and designed in our country. Poland is one of the largest car manufacturers in Europe – so what if practically all of them were designed abroad – they are only produced here. The same applies to the manufacture of airplanes, refrigerators, televisions and many, many other items.
Poland has one of the lowest R&D expenditure ratios in the European Union. Both per capita and percentage of GDP. Our economy is not innovative – it has become restorative.
But what happens to young creators and engineers? Are we so creative? Where are the ideas? Is it easy to break through with a new, innovative idea? How can you help Polish engineers and designers to sail into wider waters?
And most importantly – the promotion of the country is the most effective by the products identified with it. The more innovative, advanced, nice or useful, the stronger the association with the country. IKEA, Lego, Nokia, Mercedes, Sony – these are the keywords describing not only the company, but also the countries from which they come.
This is how the idea of creating the Foundation was born – an institution that will help promote Polish technical thought and implement polish projects. The creators want to show both in Poland and abroad that products with the inscription “Made in Poland” are of the highest quality and we can be proud of them.
G.GERLACH brand owners also want to support Polish engineers, technicians, ergonomics and industrial design specialists and help them implement their ideas and concepts into production.
The patron was Polish industrialist, who in his factory built measuring devices and pressure gauges at the highest world level. He was a Vokulski of his time.
This is how the G. Gerlach Foundation for the Development of Polish Technical Thought and Precision Mechanics was established.

GUSTAW GERLACH - patron of the foundation.
This story begins in 1845 when eighteen-year-old Gustav Gerlach comes to Warsaw from Berlin. He is accompanied by confectioner Karl Emil Wedel (founder of probably the most famous in Poland and existing confectionery plants) and expensive Fryderyk Plus (creator of the well-known and valued in the nineteenth century Toilet Soap, Perfume and Cosmetic Products Factory).
Gustav Gerlach, as a werkmajster, is employed in a plant producing optical instruments in Krakowskie Przedmieście (near the palace of Wincete Krasiński, where the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts is currently located).
He is doing so well that he first becomes a partner, and in 1852 he repays the current owner and takes over the factory.
It changes its name – from now on the products will be signed with the “G.Gerlach” brand. Soon Gustav Gerlach decides to change the location of the factory – he moves it to ul. That 38/40. It also opens a shop with its products in a prestigious place – in a tenement house at Nowy Świat 67. Later he will open another shop at ul. Clean, but also in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The factory is developing perfectly, producing optical and measuring instruments for the market not only of the Russian partition, but also of the whole Russia.
This is a good time – the Russian Empire is beginning to industrialize: new investments are being created, railway lines are being built, factories are being designed and their technical infrastructure is being built. Everywhere there were needed theodolites, levelers and drawing instruments, which were supplied by the G.Gerlach factory. Soon (1882) the factory receives the privilege of signing its products and advertisements with the emblem of the Empire.
Gustaw Gerlach, getting rich, begins to engage in philanthropic activities – especially in the Warsaw Charity Society and at the Evangelical-Augsburg congregation, of which he is a member. He also encourages his sons to do this by teaching them to combine professional work with charity.
On the wall of the tenement house at ul. Tamka Gustaw Gerlach builds a sundial, which until the Warsaw Uprising will be a characteristic element of Powiśle.
When he turns 60, Gustav Gerlach retires and hands over the factory to his sons: Emil and Gustav, who maintain the brand (then: the Factory of Optical, Mathematical and Drawing Instruments p.f. “G. Gerlach”) and further develop the family business.
The assortment includes m.in. binoculars, typewriters, pressure gauges.
The brothers continue their father’s philanthropic activity – they finance the construction of the Sanatorium for the Breast Sick in Rudka near Mrozów, and Emil Gerlach sits on the board of the Warsaw Society for Tuberculosis. Gerlachs are also patrons of the famous Polish Theatre.
This family combination of entrepreneurship, talent, great technical knowledge and visionary with enormous social sensitivity makes Gerlachs extremely inspiring characters. This combination of features puts them in line with the most prominent positivist figures, which in literature symbolizes Stanisław Wokulski from Bolesław Prus’s “Doll”.
In 1919, the Gerlachs sold the factory to their great-aunts Henryk, Gustav and Emil Ludwik Voellnagl, who will develop the production of m.in. o elements of aircraft avionics and compasses. G.Gerlach pressure gauges will be installed in Polish PZL.37 Łoś, PZL.23 Karaś bombers and PZL.11 fighters. They will also be used in the shipbuilding industry, which is being born in reborn Poland.
Unfortunately, the factory and residential buildings at Tamka were destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising and were never rebuilt.
The end of the buildings is also the end of the factory. After the war Emil Voellnagel tries unsuccessfully at ul. It turns out to be impossible to recreate the activity in vain, but post-war political and economic conditions.
