What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein belonging to the fibrillar protein family. It is the main component of the extracellular matrix. The most important task of collagen is to maintain the structural integrity and elasticity of connective tissue, so that the joints function properly. In addition, its characteristic structure makes it binds large amounts of water. Thanks to such properties, it affects the skin.

In the human body, construction and decomposition processes are constantly taking place. Nutrition has a great impact on their course. However, since the age of about 25, collagen decomposition is overtaken by the production process. The disappearance of collagen fibers is the cause of wrinkles, the appearance of cellulite, flaccid skin, as well as joint problems. According to doctors, it is crucial to reverse this process, i.e. slow down decomposition processes and support construction processes. Only then it becomes possible to improve the condition of not only the skin, but also the joints. Meanwhile, 28 types of collagen have been identified, which have various important biological functions to perform in the human body.
