The Ricoh GR IV is the new generation of the GR series flagship. This series, present on the market since 1996, has gained the trust of users as a camera for everyday and street photography. The new model introduces improvements in optical design, ergonomics and performance.

The lens of the new GR combines a proven design concept with modern solutions

It uses a large, precisely formed aspherical lens made of glass, which acts as the final element. Thanks to effective aberration correction, photos gain exceptional sharpness throughout the frame – from the center to the edges. The lens unit was further flattened thanks to the appropriate arrangement of glass with a high refractive index and low dispersion along with an aspherical lens. The new lens tube mechanism not only improves ergonomics, but also reduces camera start-up time and ensures faster autofocus performance.

Image matrix

Exceptional detail, rich tonal transitions and excellent performance at high sensitivity. To enhance all these features, the camera uses a rear-illuminated CMOS sensor in APS-C format (approx. 25,74 effective megapixels).

GR Engine 7

The newly developed GR ENGINE 7 image processor takes full advantage of the information provided by the new GR lens and image sensor. Improved processing power provides a more subtle and realistic representation of your photos. Increased processing speed also translates into better camera response, including more efficient autofocus operation.

Improved image quality with high sensitivity

The GR IV offers even better performance at high sensitivity – up to ISO 204800, which extends the range by one degree compared to the GR III. The image with a high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), generated by the rear-illuminated sensor, is optimally processed by a special Accelerator Unit and then transmitted to the GR ENGINE 7 processor.

5-axis image stabilization

Image stabilization in the GR IV model compensates not only for angular and rotational vibrations, but also linear shifts. The improved correction algorithm allows you to achieve a stabilization effect corresponding to up to 6 degrees of shutter speed equivalent.

Automatic white balance

In response to user feedback that white balance correction in incandescent lighting is too weak (the heat of the dominant remains), the GR IV offers a new option “Auto WB (White Priority)”. This setting provides a stronger white balance correction than the previous [AWB function under incandescent light: High]. Compact and slim design

The camera you can carry in your pocket becomes a natural extension of your body the moment you take it in your hand. The GR IV received a smaller, thinner housing while maintaining and improving performance. Particularly noticeable is the reduction in body thickness (excluding the handle and lens section), which allowed for a deeper and more secure grip. Optimal profiling of the front grip and ergonomic shape of the thumb support on the back of the camera create a design that naturally lies in the hand.

Quick start

Thanks to the newly developed lens tube mechanism and optimized start-up sequence, the GR IV achieves the fastest standby time in the history of the series – just 0,6 seconds. Switching to macro mode and hiding the lens after taking a photo has been further accelerated.

Fast autofocus

The new lens tube mechanism with improved drive and a sensor with faster reading allowed to significantly increase the speed of AF operation. Focus accuracy has been further improved with a refined autofocus algorithm.

AF performance has also been upgraded in harsh environments – low-light contrast detection efficiency has been increased and the phase detection range covering most of the frame has been extended.

Snap Distance Priority

In Snap Distance Priority mode, the user sets the distance himself, and the camera automatically selects the aperture in such a way that the object is in the appropriate depth of field (so-called technique. "zone focus").

Exposure compensation button Exposure compensation has been redesigned as a dedicated button, which enables intuitive and fast operation. With your thumb, you can immediately control the exposure by holding the camera in your hand. The button shape is carefully designed to make it easy to remove the camera from your pocket smoothly and prevent accidental pressing.

Personalization of settings

Flexible configuration of ADJ mode, Fn button and many other functions increases the comfort of use. The operation of the front and rear knobs, as well as the exposure compensation button, can be individually adjusted for each exposure mode. The most commonly used settings can be saved on the U1/U2/U3 mode knob, allowing you to instantly adjust the camera to suit your scene.

Image Control “Cinema”

The characteristic “look” of the film is one of the key elements that give a unique atmosphere to the images. Many photographers were inspired by the aesthetics of films in their work, making it a kind of artistic language. The new Image Control mode “Cinema” is based on the classic look of cinematic films and allows you to give your photos a unique, atmospheric character.

Outdoor View Setting: AUTO

The Outdoor View Setting feature provides excellent visibility in both bright daylight and dark rooms. A novelty in the GR IV model is the AUTO option, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the LCD display to ambient conditions.

Dust Removal II

The UV/IR filter placed in front of the matrix has received a new anti-dirt and anti-static coating, which effectively reduces the adhesion of dust to the sensor.

Internal memory 53 GB

The GR IV is equipped with 53 GB of built-in memory, allowing you to save approx. 3 498 JPEG images or 995 RAW images.

The user can indicate the priority place of recording, as well as switch between internal memory and memory card during shooting. In addition, it is possible to copy photos between both media, which ensures flexible file management and convenient backup.

Improved battery life

The GR IV uses a high-capacity 1800 mAh battery DB-120. Despite the reduction in body size, the working time has been extended to approx. 250 photos (for comparison: GR III – approx. 200 photos).
