Alpha-lipoic acid is an extremely strong antioxidant that occurs naturally in our body. It is endogenously synthesized and supplied with food. It is found in plant and animal products, and the largest amounts contain offal, yeast, broccoli, spinach and potatoes. There have never been cases of deficiency of this compound, but clinical studies indicate that its supplementation brings many health benefits.

From a biological point of view, alpha-lipoic acid plays an important role in energy transformation. It participates in obtaining energy from nutrients by cellular respiration, taking place in the mitochondria. In addition, it is an intracellular antioxidant that neutralizes free oxygen radicals formed during everyday metabolic processes. It is also needed in the reproduction of other antioxidants, e.g. vitamins C and E.

Due to its strong antioxidant properties, alpha-lipoic acid is used to relieve symptoms of diabetic neuropathy. It is a complication of diabetes, which involves damage to the peripheral nerves as a result of chronic excess glucose in the blood. It manifests itself first with tingling limbs, and then with their burning pain and numbness. In Germany, alpha-lipoic acid is prescribed for neuropathy as a medicine and even given by injection. It is assumed that it is also worth supplementing the therapy of hypertension and autoimmune diseases, because its antioxidant effect has a huge impact on inflammatory processes. This compound is useful in heavy metal poisoning, as it has the ability to chelate them, i.e. create complexes with them, which are then removed from the body. Alpha-lipoic acid also contributes to improvement of the condition of the whole organism and to inhibition of aging processes, which also results from its antioxidant properties.

Precautions: The product is not intended for young children, pregnant or breastfeeding women. In case of hypersensitivity, the product should be discontinued. Interactions with medicines used for diabetes and chemotherapy are possible. It is believed that it can reduce the activity of thyroid hormones.
