KETO-DIASTIX®strip tests are designed to monitor the presence and concentration of glucose and ketone bodies (acetoacetic acid) in the urine, for independent use by people with diabetes and by qualified medical personnel.

KETO-DIASTIX® are specific to glucose and ketone bodies in urine. Acetoacetic acid, commonly known as ketone bodies, can occur in the urine of a person with diabetes. The test fields on the KETO-DIASTIX® bar, when immersed in a urine sample, change color depending on the amount of glucose and ketone bodies. Studies conducted using KETO-DIASTIX® test strips can be a signal to change the diet and treatment of a person with diabetes. Follow the instructions of your doctor when conducting the test.

Small amounts of ketone bodies in the body are generally not harmful, but too many of them can be dangerous. Ketone bodies are produced in situations where the body burns too much fat to get energy. This can lead to the induction of ketoacidosis, which in turn can cause diabetic coma. The presence of ketone bodies is therefore a signal that abnormal changes are taking place in the body.

When should urine be tested using theKETO-DIASTIX® tests?

1. During a cold, flu, infection or other illness.
2. Feeling signs of high blood sugar (above 240 mg/dL or 13,3 mmol/L) and when the result of the measured glucose level exceeds the value set by the doctor.
3. In case of exposure to stress (e.g. at home, at school, at work or on vacation)
4. Regularly during pregnancy and on the dates recommended by your doctor.

RESULTS

The colour fields reflect the nominal value; the actual value will be within the nominal value.

Glucose: The results are read on the basis of color fields; as negative or to varying degrees positive depending on the level of glucose in the urine. Colour fields are indicated as negative and correspond to glucose content of 100 mg/dl (5,5 mmol/l), 250 mg/dl (14 mmol/l), 500 mg/dl (28 mmol/l), 1000 mg/dl (56 mmol/l), 2000 mg/dl (111 mmol/l) or more.

Ketone bodies: The results are read on the basis of color fields; as negative or to varying degrees positive depending on the level of ketone bodies in the urine. Colour fields are indicated as negative and corresponding to the content of ketone bodies in trace amounts (5 mg/dl or 0,5 mmol/l), small (15 mg/dl or 1,5 mmol/l), medium (40 mg/dl or 4 mmol/l), high (80-160 mg/dl or 8-16 mmol/l).
