• The key to the longevity of cobalt drill bits is cooling. Despite their high thermal resistance, always use drilling oil or cooling emulsion. This will increase the life of the tool several times.
• Drilling in hard steel (e.g. stainless), set the drill to lower revolutions than ordinary steel, but apply stronger pressure. The drill must "cut" the material, not slip on it, which causes the metal surface to harden.
• Remember that cobalt-doped drill bits are very hard, but therefore more brittle than regular HSS drill bits. Avoid lateral stresses and bending the drill so as not to break the drill.
• When drilling through, release the pressure in the last phase of drilling to avoid a sudden and blockage of the drill.
