Vilcacora, known in Spanish as Uña de Gato (translated as “cat’s claw”), is the queen among Peruvian herbs and one of the main components of phytotherapeutic treatments.
Vilcacora is a plant native to South America, specifically the Peruvian Andes. The climbing plant, sometimes referred to as liana, grows up to 30 m in length and reaches maturity only after about 20 years. Only then is Uña de Gato suitable for use in phytotherapy. In traditional herbal medicine of indigenous tribes of South America, vilcacora has been known for 2000 years. For the Western world, it was discovered only in 1972 due to the history of grower Don Luis, after which it began to be sold throughout Latin America. In 1974, an Austrian research group with Klaus Keplinger began systematic work on explaining the pharmacological properties of this plant.
The ancient legend of the largest Peruvian indigenous tribe Asháninka tells the story of finding vilcacora in the following way: a hunter from the Asháninka tribe set out for the rainforest to get food for his family. After a long and tiring hunt, however, he still had no prey and wandered in the forest, having only the remains of strength. Suddenly he saw a cougar tearing the liana with its claws and drinking the juice coming out of it. Then the cougar, filled with new strength, hunted the deer. The hunter followed the example of the cougar, also drank the juice of the wonderful liana and fell asleep. Upon waking up, he found himself full of strength, and immediately hunted a large battleship. Since then, vilcacora has been considered a sacred plant. The Asháninks believe that the discovery of vilcacora was no accident, but that it was shown to them by God through a cougar, which they have since stopped hunting and began to worship.
Perhaps it is thanks to this legend that vilcacora is called Uña de Gato in Spanish. However, it is more likely that the name comes from curved spikes growing on the liana, which resemble cat claws in their appearance. Of all the plants of the genus Uncaria, only two, Uncaria guianensis and Uncaria tomentosa, are used in phytotherapy. Uncaria tomentosa contains substances with a stronger effect and due to the wider range of application is preferred.
Usage: The use of vilcacora is primarily important for our immune system. Supports its ability to naturally defend the body. It positively affects the process of phagocytosis. The immune system prevents the spread of undesirable foreign substances in the body and absorbs old or damaged cells. Due to its immunostimulating properties, vilcacora is not recommended after organ transplantation or during pregnancy. Vilcacora could strengthen the body’s immune system’s response to cells perceived as foreign and encourage it to eliminate them. Other positive properties of Uncaria tomentosa mentioned include supporting joint health. Especially the elderly or people overburdening joints, e.g. When practicing certain sports, they can use vilcacora as a supplement to their lifestyle.
